Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is a unique branch of swimming that is done in rivers, lakes, and oceans – or any other body of water that isn’t a swimming pool. Conditions vary and swimmers need to be flexible and able to adapt to different sorts of extremes. For example, some races force swimmers to survive strong wind and waves while other races involve strategically navigating currents. Open water swims are done in both hot and cold climates and in water that varies in its degree of cleanliness. Dodging boats, knocking elbows with other competitors and sighting various types of sea creatures are all aspects of the sport of open water swimming!
Open water swimming is now officially an Olympic sport! The 10 kilometer distance was conducted at the Olympic Games for the first time ever in Beijing in the summer of 2008. Although the 10K is the Olympic distance, there are many different lengths of open water races. Traditionally, a ‘marathon’ in the sport of open water swimming has referred to a swim that is 25 kilometers or longer. The world’s elite open water swimmers race at a pace of approximately 5 kilometers per hour, so a marathon race in swimming can last anywhere from 5 hours to 10 hours or longer!
Did you know?
The longest distance Erica has ever swum at one time is 88 kilometers (about 55 miles!)
The longest amount of time Erica has ever swum at once is 10 hours, 5 minutes!
Erica works extensively with open water swimmers and triathletes to encourage and promote the sport of open water swimming!
News From Erica
Hello!
Thank you for checking out my site. Although I am no longer officially training and competing on a regular basis, I am definitely doing my best to stay involved in the sport of open water swimming.
Over the summer, I competed in both the 5K and 10K US Masters Swimming National Open Water Championship events, finishing first among the females in both races. The 10K took place in northern Michigan and since my family has a cottage there, I had an entire fan club present to watch me swim. The 5K was actually the Big Shoulders race in Chicago this year and once again, I had numerous friends and supporters there. Thank you to all of you who came out to cheer for me and support me during those events!
In addition to swimming in those races this summer, I also participated in the Swim Across America in Chicago. Thanks to numerous family members and friends, I raised over $1,000 that will go toward cancer research, prevention and treatment. It was an honor and a thrill to be part of the event and I hope to join in many similar efforts in the future.
While I definitely enjoy participating in swimming races and events, I also spend as much time as I can speaking with other athletes and training swimmers and triathles in open water swimming. I had the privilege of working closely with Chicago Endurance Sports and their open water swimming program over the summer and would strongly encourage anyone who is interested to join that group.
Thank you, again, for continuing to follow my swimming career. Please feel free to contact me at any point.
