Open Water Training and Racing Tips

Open Water Swimming
Open water swimming is a unique branch of swimming that is done in rivers, lakes, and oceans – or any other body of water that isn’t a swimming pool. Conditions vary and swimmers need to be flexible and able to adapt to different sorts of extremes. For example, some races force swimmers to survive strong wind and waves while other races involve strategically navigating currents. Open water swims are done in both hot and cold climates and in water that varies in its degree of cleanliness. Dodging boats, knocking elbows with other competitors, and sighting various types of sea creatures are all aspects of the sport of open water swimming!

Open water swimming is now officially an Olympic sport! The 10 kilometer distance will be conducted at the Olympic Games for the first time ever in Beijing in the summer of 2008. Although the 10K is the Olympic distance, there are many different lengths of open water races. Traditionally, a ‘marathon’ in the sport of open water swimming has referred to a swim that is 25 kilometers or longer. The world’s elite open water swimmers race at a pace of approximately 5 kilometers per hour, so a marathon race in swimming can last anywhere from 5 hours to 10 hours or longer!

Did you know?
The longest distance Erica has ever swum at one time is 88 kilometers (about 55 miles!)
The longest amount of time Erica has ever swum at once is 10 hours, 5 minutes!
Erica is currently working full-time for Kaplan Test Prep and Admissions in Chicago, Illinois while training for the Great Channel Race across the English Channel in August of 2009!

News From Erica

Hello,

Unfortunately, the Great Channel Swim has officially been canceled.

To make a long story short, the French backed out. The French Coastguard decided that there were not enough safety precautions in place and withdrew their support of the event. Without their support, the organizing committee was forced to cancel the race.

I am extremely disappointed – crossing the English Channel is something I have wanted to do for a very long time and I was absolutely thrilled to have been presented with such an amazing opportunity.

While I originally thought about crossing the Channel this summer on my own even though the race was canceled, I ultimately decided not to go through with it. I could list numerous reasons and try to explain all of the factors I have been considering, but instead, I’ll just say that this is not the right time for me to do the swim. The race across the Channel was an opportunity that I could not pass up, but trying to set up a solo swim for this summer at this point in time is an entirely different story.

Instead of swimming the English Channel this summer, I am going to re-evaluate my training program and set some new plans and goals. If there is one thing open water swimming has taught me, it is the need to be flexible in order to deal with ever changing circumstances. This is a great disappointment for me, but I have always believed that things often happen for a reason. I will learn from this and I will move on.

I am currently planning to race in the10K US Masters Swimming National Championships in Harbor Springs, Michigan and I will also be doing the 5K Big Shoulders race in Chicago in September. If you have any other summer race suggestions, please send them my way!

Thank you to everyone for your optimism and support throughout this process.

~Erica
